Whimsical Coloring with the latest Jane Davenport + Spellbinders Stamp Sets

Hi Artie! I love a challenge. My comfort zone is Clean and Simple and ink blending and Copic coloring. But with today’s cards, I ventured into experimental territory for me. I did some watercolor splotching and doodling for backgrounds and a bit of pop art Copic coloring.

For today’s cards, I used stamps from Spellbinders’ Jane Davenport line. They have a few sets now featuring her designs from her book Whimsical and Wild Happy Hour Art Journal Book.

For my first two cards, I used the Panda Thank You set. I stamped them out on Legion Cold Press Watercolor Paper with Hero Arts Intens-ified Black Ink. This paper has an amazing texture and holds water beautifully.

I worked on the image section by section using the 36 pan Altenew Watercolor Set. I did a lot of experimenting with my coloring here. Basically, I wet the paper with a clean brush, and then added layers of color, allowing each section to dry before adding another layer.

After finishing the image, I added splotches of blue-green and violet around the panel. When they dried, I doodled them into trees. I added some more doodles in the background with no coloring. Then, i grounded them image with some horizontal lines using a fine liner. Then, I stamped the sentiment with Intens-ified Black Ink.

To finish off the card, I trimmed the panel down to 4 x 5.25” and popped it up on the front of a card base with fun foam.

For the second card, I followed the same process as above, only as I colored in the last layer of each section, I pressed a textured paper towel over it and left the imprint of the paper towel behind. I enjoyed the look of the dots it made in the image.

Next, I fussy cut the image out and ran a black marker around the outside edge of the image to make it pop against the plain background. I raised it up on foam tape and grounded the image with horizontal lines using my fine liner.

Finally, I stamped the girl’s fallen crown on the ground and colored it in with Y28-25-21 Copic markers.

For my last card, I colored it in with the Pop Art style in cool blues and blue violets. Next, I masked off the image and stamped and clear heat-embossed the bow over the background. Then, I used a blender brush to add a blue gradient from the bottom right up.

I finished off the card by white heat-embossing the sentiment on black cardstock. Then, I trimmed it down and popped it up on foam tape.
